Real Food

I feel yuck and for a long time I've wanted to improve my diet and eat a lot more fresh vegetables, more organic and generally real food. The kids have rebelled for so long now against certain vegetables that gradually we have been reduced down to almost nothing!

The tide is to change as I have vowed to Mr Doris that I am going to take charge of the shopping and to take more care of the catering. Bless him for he is such a sweetie and does so much but I have become a lazy so-and-so, just gotten used to sitting back while he did everything. Well, my laziness has to stop and our diet has to improve. The kids have no idea except that I sat my daughter down the other day and explained to her it was nothing personal but I was going to start cooking more vegetables and if she chose to pick them over then so be it but it would be better if she learned to eat them. By the way, she has been a vegetarian for periods of time and is the only vegetarian I know who wouldn't eat vegetables!

Just to confess all, our weekly diet consists of: a ready made pasta and sauce dish one evening; a frozen ready meal another evening; a ready made pizza another evening.... and already we are getting a picture here. The other evenings would vary: home-made bolognese with wholewheat pasta; pesto pasta (wholewheat); home-made chicken fajitas (organic chicken and fresh peppers); home-made dish of prawns and rice; etc. It is not all bad but it just isn't good enough.

www.slowfood.com has a lifestyle I hanker after which involves taking care and delight in our food because it feeds much more than our bellies. For some time now I have been saying how I want to source organic meats and produce locally but I just haven't done it. Recently in town I came across a Slow Food deli which opened my eyes and gave me lots of tasters of fabulous local cheeses.

If it costs a little more in the end then so be it but what wonderful fuel we will be putting in our bodies. But I wonder with better management if it will really cost more? Sure it will take me away from the computer but far better that I am doing wonderful stuff in the kitchen or down local farms than sitting here always at my computer flaffing around. I'm hoping I might end up more focused. Best of all I'm doing it for me and Mr Doris because I know that we will both appreciate it. The kids will just have to come round to it all. Fingers crossed.

I am laughing so hard about your vegetarian daughter who doesn't eat veggies. I try and buy 100% organic whenever possible and have cut way back on the red meat. It's hard finding good organic products in the normal markets here but I hit the farmers markets whenever possible.

So will you be posting recipes? I hope so and will be happy to share if you do.

Huggers for the funny comment/reply to my morning babble :-)

We invested twelve quid in a cheap and cheerful jug blender last week and have been having smoothies - someone did lend me a juicer, but it seemed madness to extract the juice and throw away the fibre.

It's really upped our fruit and veg intake and I do feel a lot better for it - I don't get that 'must have some chocolate or a biscuit' feeling in mid-afternoon for a start, and my sugar-in-tea needs have dropped right off. Good luck!

what ends up costing you more is the inner aisles in the markets. the outer aisles, mainly the healthier foods, cost less.
with your busy lifestyle you probably cant do this, but i plan our meals for 2 weeks. i've got a system that works for me & certain cooking magazines i subscribe to. now, i have enough i don't need to add anymore. but it saves us so much money because i always have lists & we always have a meal plan.
you're doing all 4 of you a great service by eating healthier. i wish you all excellent health & great meals!

I am looking at your normal diet - much what my husband would like, except he has a tendency to get chips (fries) into the mix at least once a week.
I can't do it, without fruit/veg in my diet I start to feel to yukky - your diet list makes me feel sluggish and under the weather just looking at it.
Maybe start with a multivitamin? Feeling better makes people more enthusiastic.

Have you room to start your own veggie garden? We grow our own veggies and that way we know exactly what we're getting. We produce enought o lat us all year round with help of freezer - this year we grew courgettes, carrots, cabbage, turnips, parsnips, corn, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, chillis, swede, radishes - oh the list is endless.
You get outdoors more - very healthy and much tastier and lots of satisfaction. You can't get any more local than your back garden.

Cricket Ignorance

I suppose I watch cricket like a little kid watches the news: I can see and hear stuff but none of it makes any sense and everything jumbles together. However, I understand that we, the English, are on the verge of winning against Australia for the first time in umpteen years.

What I have managed to pick out though, is there is this Australian bowler who not only looks Australian but looks like he handles crocodiles. And there are a couple of other guys who wear those Aussie looking hats which helps me to identify them as not being English. Otherwise, unlike football, it looks like both sides wear the same clothes so how are you supposed to know which is which when they are bowling or fielding?

Health and safety is out the window with people sitting on rooftops on buildings around the field. Not nice safe flat roofs outside a window but the pinnacle of tall apex roofs.

Then there are the guys in orange reflective gear sitting all round the field with their back to the action watching the crowd intently. That must be a hard job.

What is funny, is the crowd sounds like a football crowd - so noisy and boisterous. It looks like a lot of fun and good on them.

Sanitary Towel Designers

I wonder who actually designs sanitary towels and how are they designed? I would be pretty miffed if it is actually a room full of men in white coats designing these things.

We've all heard the jokes about the ones with wings but what I don't get is the ones with the wings off centre leaving a slightly longer length one end. Sometimes easily an inch (two+ centimetres) longer so it is not insignificant in that part of the body. There are never instructions on the pack to say have the longer bit at the front or the back. I just want to know!

I hate the damn things.
You have to buy so many brands to try and find one that fits your shape and doesnt leak, slide, or poke you in the thigh.
And they don't tell you that not all knickers will take the sticky, you need fairly unstretchy smalls or the wings undo and start caterpillar crawling down your jeans/tights.
Horrible.
Thanks for the tip, Mrs Dof - will try that.
At the moment its slim (wheres it gone?) liners, or crunch-when-you-walk nappy pad things, or tampons with the usual 'Dear God dont let it be too small/ let it be too big and leave rips of cotton wool behind'.
All that said, now I bet it IS men who design the lot.

X on the houses hit by Katrina

I have watched the news reports over and over about the search efforts in areas hit by hurricane Katrina and wondered what the cross meant that is drawn on the door posts and then the subsequent notes written.

After a good deal of searching I have downloaded from FEMA the CERT Instructor Guide: Unit 5: Light Search and Rescue Operations. In there it says:

Make a single diagonal slash next to the door just before entering a structure. Make an opposite slash (creating an "X") when all occupants have been removed and search and rescue efforts have been completed. The "X" signals to other potential searchers that the area has already been searched. This method:

• Indicates rescuer location.
• Prevents duplication of effort.

This still doesn't answer what is written in each of those quadrants of the cross, so I used some of the description as a search term and came up with: Peninsula Cert Light Search & Rescue Procedures which clarifies:

6.Mark Searched Areas. Marking searched areas prevents duplication efforts and identifies where rescuers are and have been. Make a single diagonal slash on or next to the door just before entering. Make an opposite slash, (creating an "X"), when all occupants have been removed and the search of that area is finished, the four quadrants of the "X" can be used to indicate the initials of the searcher (left quadrant), the time/date of the search, (top quadrant), personal hazards, (right quadrant), and the number of victims still inside, (bottom quadrant). Use a zero if no victims are found. Put a box around the "X" if it is not safe to conduct search and rescue efforts in the room or building.

Being a sad geek, as a result of these findings, I created the graphic above.

They covered this topic on 60 Minutes this past Sunday. For part of the segment they followed some volunteers as they did a house-to-house. In what has been frequently occuring in New Orleans they gave an initial body count in the thousands--and this for an upscale neighborhood. Of course not a single body was found. Duh.

In a situation as horrible as this, there's no need to exaggerate numbers so why do they persist in doing so?

That is quite lovely Doris .. and I especially like the turquoise X as it matches your background perfectly! I only wish that the actual product of the searchers was that neat. Of course writing with a can a spray paint can't be easy.

Yes .. they have downed the total dead numbers. I never thought that there would be ten THOUSAND dead! There were MANY of course ... but I do believe that the final tally won't even come near that figure!

They are now showing pictures of mutilated bodies ... supposedly mutilated after death ... that are being found in places like the Convention Center. The government is trying to stop the reporters going anywhere near bodies.

It is so sad.

Wow, that's interesting. I'd heard they were putting X's on houses, sounded like the Biblical plagues to me, but I don't watch TV so I never saw the pictures of them. I also thankfully haven't seen that many pictures of bodies - I don't know whether because less pictures are making it to the news websites, or the reporters aren't seeing bodies, or they've seen them but tastefully aren't showing them.

Thanks for that Zandperl .... on the first link someone has now added a comment that then fits in with what I have found. However, I thought there may well be some regional difference in the way the markings were done and then the other night I was watching the news and it seemed that something other than date and time were being written in the top quadrant.

So it would be interesting to know in what other ways these marks are read.
